How to Make a DIY Wine Bottle Bag (Video)

Fall is my absolute favorite season; I love how entertaining moves away from backyard barbecues and becomes more about intimate dinner parties around the dining room table. I’m a firm believer in bringing something special for the hostess, and a bottle of La Crema is always my go-to gift. For Fall I’m a big fan of gifting Pinot Gris; it’s notes of pineapple and ripe pear, pair perfectly with seasonal pumpkin and turkey dishes.

Supplies List:

  • Burlap wine bags
  • Fabric paint or fabric markers
  • Sponge applicator (optional)
  • Stencils (unless you want to go free-hand)
  • Your favorite bottle of La Crema
  • Screw eyes
  • Twine
  • Bottle cork

5 Steps to Making Your DIY Wine Bag

Step 1: Lay Out the Bag

Start by laying your wine bottle bag flat on a clean surface, ensuring it’s smooth and ready for decorating.

Step 2: Personalize with Paint or Fabric Markers

Use paint or fabric markers to customize your bag with words, patterns, or designs that suit the occasion. Phrases like “Cheers,” “Thanks,” or even wedding-themed words like “Wedded” on one side and “Bliss” on the other add a personal touch. A sponge applicator can create a stamped effect for a stylish, textured look.

Step 3: Let the Paint Dry

Allow your design to dry completely before handling the bag to avoid smudging.

Step 4: Make a Cork Embellishment

While your bag is drying, create a decorative cork accent. Take an old cork and twist a small screw eye into the top until it sits flush.

Step 5: Attach Twine and Tie to the Bag

Thread a piece of twine through the screw eye and tie it around the neck of the wine bag for a rustic, handcrafted finish.

More Ways to Customize Your Wine Bag

Once your DIY wine bottle bag is complete, you can add even more personal flair with a few creative embellishments. Here are some simple and stylish ideas to make your wine bag truly unique:

  • Ribbons: Add a satin or burlap ribbon around the neck of the bag for an elegant touch. You can mix and match colors to fit the season or occasion.
  • Dried Flowers: Attach a sprig of lavender, rosemary, or dried roses for a rustic, natural feel. Secure them with twine or a hot glue gun.
  • Wax Seals: For a vintage, polished look, use a wax seal with a monogram or design to add a classy, personal touch.
  • Handwritten Gift Tags: Write a heartfelt note on a piece of craft paper or a decorative card, and tie it to the bag with twine.

These simple additions can elevate your wine bag from good to great, making it a thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gift that’s sure to impress!

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial! You’ll notice that I used black paint on all of my bags- and that’s because I’m a big believer in using what you have around the house.
